We help parents to understand their child's sensory needs, differences and behaviours. We help parents and teachers make changes to the environment and to enable a 'better fit' for the child. We help children understand and learn strategies to help themselves.
We work in collaboration with teachers and schools.
Why do we do this? 'When there is a greater understanding of sensory needs and differences, a transformation and shift in how one perceives the challenges can make all of the difference in behaviour, development, and quality of life for a child’.
What do we mean by sensory differences?
We all react differently to the world around us. I may feel stress because I can't concentrate with the radio on but my work colleague can't work without the radio on! We can all identify with things like this that cause conflicts in our homes and work places.
Some people react VERY DIFFERENTLY to the extent that it really interferes with their everyday lives. They may feel very ANXIOUS all of the time and feel the need to control everything around them.
They may find loud or unexpected noise hard to bear; struggle to coordinate their own bodies and be clumsy; find light touch or their own clothes 'sore'; struggle to concentrate; find it difficult to regulate their behaviour or emotions and have meltdowns or just avoid things altogether.
They may feel 'out of sync' with others around them and find everyday life challenging. This can lead to low confidence/self-esteem and can affect mental health.
If these differences have a significant impact, they may be diagnosed with a medical condition such as Asperger's, Dyspraxia, Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder or sensory processing disorder.
